Almost the New Year

We went to IBN Buttatta Mall and found a pair of binoculars for Hubby(Merry Christmas Honey!). They are really good ones. Of course now we can really watch the construction workers and all the action on The Palm and the beach too! Does that mean bikinis? Better hide the binoculars!

Then went grocery shopping for our New Year dinner. As we were strolling around the store there were some items I thought you'd be interested in knowing about.
In the cereal section....Cocoa Shreddies (chocolate covered wheat chex). Then Weetos...(chocolate covered cherrios) There are the usual that we have in the US.

Quail eggs in little tiny egg cartons. Large amounts of regular eggs, jumbo, large and small...most with orange yolks though, I don't care for those. I like the organic ones or "BIO" ones as they label them, they have yellow yolks.

Whole goose and whole duck in the meat section...like chickens. Also whole cow and calves livers. If you'd like, you can ring the bell and the butcher will cut whatever to your specifications, anything you want...except pork that is. That is in a section in the "Back" of the store.

It's hard to find sour cream, only 1 store, out of 6, so far that we have found it. Lots of yogurt, but it's kind of grainy....not right for me.
American cheese is cheddar cheese.... The "American" cheese slices are white and made here in the Emirates. Tastes good. They have alot of Kraft items. But not Mac N Cheese in a box. Another kind but not the original....haven't tried it.

Steaks are not thick....maybe 5 of these dots.(.....) thick, at the most. Hubby and I are used to 2 inch thick steaks but these are from Brazil and Australia....very lean, tender, and tasty. Of course I guess we could ask for thicker steaks...will have to ask about that after we get a BBQ....if we ever find an electric one. Safer for the apartment and propane is hard to find here.

Not much in the soup department....a few campells brands, mushroom, cream of chicken, vegetable, tomato and chicken noodle. No Golden Mushroom, or Cheese or French Onion...ones I cook with. Darn...maybe in the future. They do have alot of Knorr brand dry package soups, but not cheese type. No crackers...one brand called Pop Pan...thin and flavored onion, very good, they have Ritz brand and water crackers, yes. No Wheat Thins or Triscuits.

They don't use Chlorox or Lysol wipes....they use a sponge and bleach.

They don't have steamer baggies, which I just dicovered before we came here, and it was hard to find a metal steamer, that you put into the pot to steam with, but we eventually found one. Plenty of the wooden ones but in the kitchen we must conserve space as much as possible for good things like waffle irons and griddles and George Foremans LOL

Kleenex brand kleenex and toilet tissue...1 ply....no Charmins or Puffs. They do have Cottonelle, I just found. Ohhh.....they have kleenx "for men"! The regular kleenex will take the skin right off your nose it's so rough, BUT the kleenex for men is thick and soft. It actually says FOR MEN on the box....I thought I saved the box but guess not. When I buy another one I'll take a picture and you can see for yourselves. I think it's riot! LOL LOL

The mayo I use is Hellman's. In the states it's kind of thick and tart where here it's creamy and not as tart. Again it's made in the Emirates. I would love to see the dairy farms here. Turkeys don't do well in the heat, so they are shipped in. Chickens thrive in the desert for some reason...must be the sand for the craw.

A lot of interesting fruits and vegetables. Would love to try them, but don't know what to do with them. Hubby and I just look at each other and shake our heads. Will have to find someone to ask. But you all know me...shy di. I will mustar up the guts to ask ....hopefully I'll be able to understand the language. I do catch a few words here and there as I listen to the maid guys. They are from Pakistan...very nice men.

The water here is natually soft, yet alot of minerals... due to the salt water of the Arabian Sea....they suck water out of the Sea and take out the some salt and then put the salt back in the Sea...which is making the water too salty....round robin there, wonder what they'll do about it. They aren't concerned with air pollution yet....too bad..they should be, not that the air is polluted yet, but the more people and cars that come here, the more toxins in the air. Right now it's alot of dust in the air ...dust and condensation...so it looks like smog, but it isn't. Hope they don't wait too long! We drink bottled water only...they say you can drink the water in toen, but I'd rather not. They serve bottled water in the resturants.

I have learned that we are very much a spoiled nation. We have many many things for our comfort that we take for granted. I will not do that again. I will appreciate every little thing. I do appreciate the computer, that's for sure!
